I have been this way since birth. The day I was born, The president in the morning was f.D.R. and in the evening was Harry Truman. That must have started it. It also caused me to be 70 years old.
Well, I still have the 1956 Saturday Evening Post covers of Ike and hapless Adlai Stevenson, who was outclassed and outgunned. Back then, Republican stood for a progressive and diverse political party.
Fast forward to 1968. The election pitted George McGovern against Richard Nixon. The worm turned. McGovern was the Pied Piper of anti Vietnam War youth. But, like a typical politician, when nominated, he campaigned like an ordinary Democrat. On top of that, I was between schools in Chicago, and the streets were more interesting than the Democrats. Political mobs were everywhere and I was disgusted with them. Then things changed.
The traffic cop up at Dearborn and Wacker took a break and and walked down to shoot the bull, as he did every day. However, this time he had his nightstick in his hand and was nervous. When I asked what's up he said, "Tonight I'm going up to Lincoln Park and bust a few skulls". What?
After work I drove up to Lincoln Park to see what he meant. He meant what he said. The police were attacking people with clubs, there was tear gas in the air, and running and bleeding Peacenicks fleeing. What the...? Categories fell and I left. Change happens!
Meanwhile, Nixon was the Republican candidate. Ike didn't like him and he was a repeat offender. Now what? I was a Republican and Nixon had no character. But, ... John B. Anderson was a Republican running as an Independent candidate, and he was respectable and honest too. So, I voted for him. No Democrat and no Nixon. That was a good thing. Change happens.
Today, in 2015, there is no Republican Party. The word Republican refers to a psychological disorder and ignorance rules. Change happens.
